Another Silly Kung Fu School

I have to start by saying I did not find this article. It was posted on a forum and being discussed. A new type of martial arts for the BVI - Christian Gung-Fu is an article about a school. Of course this forced me to respond.

Here is my response in the forum:
I have nothing against Christian Kung Fu, especially since one of the most active schools in my area is the Christian Wushu Fellowship, a Kung Fu school with a pretty impressive group of students.

I do find it odd that someone studied Judo, TKD and JJ and believes they can create their own Kung Fu style. Not only do they create their own Chinese style out of their training in non-Chinese styles, they also claim that their style is the best: "Sifu Hewlett also explained what makes this new style unique and more effective than any other"....interesting.

My opinion is if this person really is a Sifu, he would have discussed his training in Kung Fu, not the other styles. If he really knows as many styles as he claims to incorporate into his style, he is probably not an expert in any of them and at best probably knows the basics of these styles. If he is a real martial artist he would have some respect for other styles instead of just claiming that his "chop suey" style is the best.

Yes, I am a grouchy dude to begin with but this type of stuff just frustrates the heck out of me. AAARRGH!!!!

Yeah.....if it is the one I saw, one guy did a back flip and bowed off then the other guy did some handstand thing and then bowed off. Later they did some techniques that look like Jiu Jitsu. Funny stuff.

Just two cents from the Capoeira corner... I can see HOW he's incorporating elements of Capoeira in that video, but frankly, the way he does it is odd. By principal the movements aren't BAD to practice as stances go, but the way he displays it is in complete separation from the context of the "why" for those techniques. This separation is sort of prevelant to a tendancy these days towards "distilation" of techniques for mixed martial artists...

Fact is that Capoeira is an evolving martial art all on its own, so to be arrogant enough to separate it and say "It's shown me all i need" without showing an understanding of context for these movements is silly. Clearly they're thinking "these moves are great advertisement" without really knowing what they're for...

Look, True Kung fu is not a style of martial arts... It is a system of martial arts. you can not take 3 or for styles of martial art sports and put them together and call it kung fu. That would be like taking karate, wrestling, boxing and tai quan doe and calling it kung fu. It is not. all sport martial arts have lost the concepts and principles and have become a sport. There are rules to all of the sports and you can not call that a system. See www.fairportkungfu.com
